Come July – A weekend in Margate

These photos were shot over a weekend on in Margate with 35mm film (Kodak Ektar to be precise). Margate has seen better times but it is currently starting to find it’s feet again as a popular destination, more so amongst the younger generation. With something to always do and celebrate, there never seems to be a dull moment.

At the centre of Margate is Dreamland, a theme park from the 1920’s that has recently just undergone a refurbishment and is home to the world’s oldest roller coaster. The photos aim to encapsulate the beauty and romance of a place that resides in people’s memories and hearts.

Batman’s House

I’m lucky enough to live in an area that is quite close to Wollaton Hall. It’s a super nice day out, plenty of space to let dogs run wild and chase some deer, Fenton style!

I went the other day to take the pup a walk and decided to take a camera I’ve never used, my Pentax SFXn. It’s quite a simple automatic 35mm film camera to use. It’s definitely not one of the ones I will go to to do some more serious work (my Canon EOS5 is where it’s at for me right now). It still however produced some half decent images on some expired film.

Let it slide

So here is the result from my first ever attempt at shooting slide film. The film I used was Fujifilm Reala 100RDPIII. I’m personally not blown away as much as this film suggest online but maybe it’s because I ened to shoot more with it to understand how to adapt to it.  have seen some absolutely cracking photos online produced from it but I’m not to sure how much was chucked in post processing.

I’m only publishing one photo as I think the others seem to be lacking slightly. This is the first time I’ve used the lens I have for Landscape and in all honesty I think it seems to be lacking in corner to corner sharpness. This may be down to me still tweaking the scanning as I know out of focus areas can occur. Trial and error is frustrating for most but I find it very satisfying and rewarding once you have got it right.

Black + White

Here is a selection of some film that I have recently developed and scanned. The photos are unedited and only have been cropped. The combination of the film and the scanning has turned them quite grainy, trying to hit the sweet spot still with scanning.

Depth of Film

Most people my age (25ish) are blessed with the benefit of growing up in an age of digital revolution with instant gratification. My passion for photography actually ended up coming from my first film camera, Holga 120CFN. A camera as basic as can be but it allowed a lot of experimentation. In the last year or so this has been lost on me, due to expensive film processing and fewer local locations, my film photography has been dormant.

I’m also a collector of film cameras so I’ve recently purchased a few but the one standout has to be the Canon EOS5. Everyone in the digital world knows all about the EOS5D and its successors the MkII and MkIII. The legacy of these modern digital cameras was based on the quality and performance of the original EOS5 SLR. I wanted to share with you why this camera is still held in high regard by many film photographers

So after all that waffle here are the best of the first ever roll of film I’ve put throughmy Canon EOS5. The film was a cheap AGFA200 from Poundland and processed and scanned by Boots. I’m working on getting a scanner so I don’t have to rely on their terrible developing and scanning quality.

I took a mixture of indoor and outdoor shots but have yet had chance for any night shots just yet. Obviously the B&W photos have been post processed but it still shows what film does best, the contrast range of an image. Very little else has been edited on these photos to try and best represent the quality of film.

I hope you enjoy the photos and if you’ve never shot film I suggest to grab yourself a decent film SLR off of eBay and load in some film and get shooting.

Thanks again,

Andy Johnny Young
